Bachman Production company XYZ Films ACE Pictures Entertainment SpectreVision Distributed by RLJE Films [1] Release date September 7, 2019 ( TIFF) [2] January 24, 2020 (United States) Running time 111 minutes [3] Country United States Portugal Malaysia Language English Box office $715, 193 [4] [5] Color Out of Space is a 2019 American science fiction cosmic horror [6] film directed by Richard Stanley, based on the short story " The Colour Out of Space " by H. Lovecraft. It stars Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson, Madeleine Arthur, Q'orianka Kilcher and Tommy Chong. This is Stanley's first feature film directed since his firing from The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996). [7] According to Stanley, it is the first film in a trilogy of Lovecraft adaptations, which he hopes to follow up with an adaptation of The Dunwich Horror. [8] Plot [ edit] In the wake of his wife Theresa's mastectomy, Nathan Gardner moves his family to a rural farm where he attempts to grow tomatoes and raise alpacas for their milk. His daughter, Lavinia, takes up Wicca and performs rituals in hopes of restoring her mother's health. One of these rituals is interrupted by the arrival of Ward, a hydrologist surveying the water table in planning for a hydroelectric dam. The family is strained by the move - Theresa, a financial adviser, is losing clients because she cannot get a reliable internet signal in their remote location; Nathan feels neglected because they have not had sex since her surgery six months ago and the rest of his family does not take his attempts at farming seriously; his son Benny hangs with Ezra, a local hermit, and has started smoking pot; his youngest son Jack is withdrawn and only interacts with their family dog, Sam. One night, Nathan convinces Theresa that despite her feelings of mutilation she is still attractive, and they begin to have sex, but they are interrupted when a brilliantly glowing meteor crash lands in their front yard. The rock emits an unearthly Color which distorts the world around it and causes Nathan to detect a horrific smell. Later, Benny and Lavinia witness the meteor being struck by several bolts of lightning. The next morning, the meteor is no longer glowing and is crumbling to dust. Ward, along with the mayor and the sheriff of the nearby town of Arkham arrive to see it. Ward notices that the groundwater has taken on an oily sheen and tests it. When his test strips begin to glow brightly with the Color, he advises the Gardners not to drink it, but he cannot convince the mayor to do anything since she does not want to scare off the dam developers. Jack becomes obsessed with a well which stands a few feet from where the meteor landed. Strange, brightly colored vegetation begins growing around it, mutated insects fly out of it and Jack insists he can hear a man in there. Nathan and Ward visit Ezra, who plays a tape recording for them of what he says are creatures moving around underground. A news crew arrives to interview Nathan about the meteor, but it has mysteriously vanished and Nathan comes off looking like a drunken fool. Later, while Theresa is preparing dinner, she absentmindedly cuts off two of her fingers. While Nathan rushes her to the hospital, he leaves Benny in charge, but things quickly get out of hand as Benny finds the alpacas uncontrollable, Sam runs away and Jack is traumatized by something he saw in the well. Nathan excoriates Benny and Lavinia, lashing out with uncharacteristic rage. He tries to take a shower but is interrupted when a squid-like creature emerges from the drain. The next day, after Nathan tries to harvest his tomatoes - which have all turned out misshapen and inedible - he and Theresa get into a fight when the internet goes out again and she loses a client. The next night, Theresa hears Jack screaming in the barn and rushes to his aid. To their horror, something awful has happened to Sam and the alpacas, and they try to flee the barn only to be struck by several bolts of Color lightning which fuses mother and child together into a single, deranged mass. Unable to start the car or call for help as all electronic devices have started malfunctioning, Nathan and the other children carry the monster into the attic where they struggle to decide what to do about the miserable, gibbering thing. Nathan, enraged at what the Color has done to his family, gets a shotgun and enters the barn, where he finds Sam and all of his alpacas fused together, and he destroys the resulting creature. He returns to the attic, orders his children to leave, and prepares to put down his mutated wife and son, but he cannot go through with it. Lavinia tries to perform a Wiccan ceremony to save her family, mutilating herself in the process. She and Benny conspire to run away from the farm, but as they are preparing to leave, Benny hears Sam whining down in the well and insists on going down after him. The Color bursts from the water and kills him, driving Lavinia insane. Losing his grip on sanity, Nathan locks Lavinia in the attic with the monster, which has now grown aggressive and attacks her. Ward and the sheriff arrive and break into the attic, and Nathan shoots the creature. As they exit the house, the Color erupts out of the well and drives Nathan insane. He tries to shoot the Color, but the sheriff mistakes Nathan's aim for Ward and shoots Nathan, who dies in Lavinia's arms. Lavinia declares she will not leave. Still intent on leaving, Ward and the sheriff go to pick up Ezra, but only find his dessicated corpse and a recording he left behind, where he surmises that the Color is attempting to remake Earth into "something it knows. " The corpse implodes, raining Color down everywhere, and a tree comes to life and kills the sheriff while Ward flees. Ward arrives and attempts to rescue Lavinia, but the Color explodes from the well and roars into the sky in a towering funnel. Lavinia touches him and shares with him her vision of where the Color hails from – a horrific sector of outer space inhabited by repulsive, tentacled alien entities similar to itself – and as he is traumatized, she dissolves into dust from her corruption. Attempting to save himself, Ward hides in the farmhouse, where space and time begin to unravel around him as he is confronted by jumbled visions of the Gardner family, and attacked by a murderous apparition of Nathan speaking in all of the family's voices, and narrowly hides in the wine cellar as the Color vanishes into the sky, tearing down the house and leaving the surrounding farmland a "blasted heath", covered in ash and drained of all color and life except for Ward himself. In an epilogue, Ward stands on top of the finished dam, and says that knowing what he knows about this place, he will never drink its water. [9] She read Lovecraft's works to Stanley when he was young. [9] At the age of 12 or 13, he read " The Colour Out of Space ", which has "always been a part of [his] psychological makeup". [9] When his mother suffered from cancer, Stanley read Lovecraft's works to her in her declining years. [9] Stanley initially announced the project in 2013, showcasing a proof of concept trailer online. [10] [11] In September 2015, it was announced that Spectrevision would be producing the film with a projected start date of early 2016. [12] After many delays, it was announced in December 2018 that Nicolas Cage had signed to play the lead role and that filming would begin in early 2019. [13] [14] In January 2019, the production announced additional cast members including stars Joely Richardson, Tommy Chong, Elliot Knight, Julian Hilliard and Q'Orianka Kilcher. [15] [16] Filming took place in Portugal [17] in February 2019. [18] Release [ edit] Color Out of Space premiered on September 7, 2019 in the Midnight Madness portion of the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. [19] On September 6, 2019, it was announced that RLJE Films acquired U. S. rights in a low-mid seven figure deal. [1] Following select preview screenings on January 22, the film was released in 81 theaters in the United States on January 24, 2020. [20] With previews and the first weekend box office, the film grossed $358, 154 over four days. [4] Critical response [ edit] On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Color Out of Space holds an approval rating of 84%, based on 141 reviews, and an average rating of 6. 66/10. Its consensus reads, "A welcome return for director Richard Stanley, Color Out of Space mixes tart B-movie pulp with visually alluring Lovecraftian horror and a dash of gonzo Nicolas Cage. " [21] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 70 out of 100, based on 8 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [22] Chris Bumbray from Arrow in the Head rated the film a score of 7/10, praising the film's performances, visual style and effects while noting the film's length. Bumbray summarized his review by writing, "While it's maybe a touch slow and arty for hardcore horror fans, Color Out of Space is still a handy comeback for Richard Stanley, who hasn't lost a beat. " [23] Mary Beth Andrews from Daily Grindhouse gave the film a positive review, writing, "His [Richard Stanley] film successfully captures the madness of Lovecraft's work and is a dazzling modern interpretation. [... ] Lovecraft is notoriously hard to adapt, but Stanley walks the fine line between horror and existential dread to create a successful adaptation". [24] Deborah Young from The Hollywood Reporter offered the film similar praise, writing, "Hitting the main plot points with well-designed SFX and some impressive night photography, Stanley's film manages to be frightening indeed, even with star Nicolas Cage's semi-farcical leavening adding some nutty laughs. " [25] Jonathan Barkan of Dread Central awarded the film 3. 5 out of 5 stars, praising the film's visual style, special effects, and soundtrack, while criticizing the film's first and third act. Nevertheless, Barken summarized his review by stating, "Gorgeous, vibrant, and terrifying, Color Out of Space is packed with Lovecraftian creatures and cosmic infections galore. It's not perfect but goddamn is it a wild ride. " [26] Dennis Harvey from Variety gave the film a mostly positive review, noting the film's uneven tone, "full-bore" climax, and Cage's "arbitrarily oddball" performance; while praising the film's otherworldly imagery, cinematography, and direction. [27] The Skinny ' s Katie Goh gave to the film a rating of 3 on 5, stating that: " Colour Out of Space is at its best when Stanley goes for this subtle and intelligent filmmaking, gesturing at the horror rather than pushing it in our faces". [Full review in Spanish] February 7, 2020 Color Out of Space is a brilliant, bonkers, and terrifying experience. It's grotesque and mesmerizing even if the journey is a little sluggish along the way. Richard Stanley's Color Out of Space ultimately ends up stuck in a losing battle, struggling to fully embody the perfectly old-fashioned B-movie body horror flick it tries so hard to be. All in all, The Color Out of Space is only OK. February 5, 2020 Cage in particular is very much in his element, proving his reputation as an undisciplined weirdo is less than deserved. His performance is one long freakout, but a carefully calibrated one, escalating as the situation deteriorates. When a rural escape goes pear-shaped, Nicolas Cage has a field day, whether milking an alpaca, promising "everything's gonna be A-OK, " or erupting like a lunatic. February 4, 2020 A delight. And If Crazy Cage is what you're looking for, that's what you'll get as the film goes on. Color Out of Space is probably the best H. P. Lovecraft adaptation I've seen. February 3, 2020 This film is the Cagiest that Cage has been in years - and that's, very much, a good thing. January 31, 2020 Cult director Richard Stanley's latest is a beautifully shot, if slightly bloated, cosmic horror film driven by a Nic Cage performance that stands as one of his best. The latest film adaptation of H. Lovecraft's horror story of a meteor strike in the Massachusetts back woods... Color Out of Space has its flaws, but its quirky energy, excellent performances, and strangely mesmerizing visuals combine to make the whole compensate for its occasionally ill-fitting parts. January 30, 2020 Stanley, with tasteful precision, walks the finest tightrope between Lovecraftian grandiosity and grindhouse grit, resulting in a movie that is both really scary when it's scary and really funny when it's funny, and supremely in control of both poles. January 29, 2020 What do you get when you hire genre filmmaker Richard Stanley, add a crafty and visually alluring premise from H. P Lovecraft, and feature a whacked-out Nicholas Cage as an alpaca farmer? You get something that looks like "Color Out of Space. " January 28, 2020 The screenplay abounds in silliness and miscalculation, there's still plenty to admire about the feature that emerged from its pages. Color Out of Space, co-written with Scarlett Amaris, isn't the equal of Annihilation in the sublime terror department, but it features more scares-per-minutes... January 27, 2020 It has the potential to be the next great (terrible) cult classic, and will definitely find a sympathetic audience in both die-hard Cage fans and D-level horror film enthusiasts. Also, the colors are pretty. A stylish, effective, often darkly funny chiller. As an added bonus, you also get alpaca jokes and Nicolas Cage at his most Nicolas Cage-iest. Cage goes for it, for better or worse, and so does Color Out of Space, for worse. Page 1 of 8.

I have seen over the last 40-plus years that Lovecraft has slowly begun to move out of the cult category to one of a broader appreciation. Certainly Colin Wilson started the nudge of the writer into wider public interest. I doubt if Lovecraft will ever become mainstream as such, but if he did, it would only be because he was being read on the surface as a novelty rather than for what he is: A writer of special perception and focuses well beyond instream.

I read the book prior and must note, they really added some nice twists to the source material. The acting was top-notch. The special make-up monster design was absolutely old-school and practical, but what I loved even more was Richard Stanley didn't exploit gore, neither overused the jumpscares here - just enough to convey the story - and the CGI was unbelievably well done, considering the budget. If like myself you enjoyed H. P. Lovecraft's story, you'll most likely love Richard Stanley's movie. I can only dream of sights that man can show us if he's given bigger projects and total freedom. Plot Summary from Wikipedia; "The Colour Out of Space" is a first-person narrative written from the perspective of an unnamed surveyor from Boston. In order to prepare for the construction of a new reservoir in Massachusetts, he surveys a rural area that is to be flooded near Lovecraft's fictional town of Arkham. He comes across a mysterious patch of land, an abandoned 5-acre (20, 000 m2) farmstead, which is completely devoid of all life. At the centre of the farmstead is an old well. The site fills him with an unnatural sense of dread, and he hurries past it. When he returns to Arkham, the surveyor asks around for information regarding the waste. He learns of an elderly hermit, Ammi Pierce, and asks him about the "blasted heath". The hermit tells him a horrific tale. In the early 1880s, the farm had been productive, run by a Nahum Gardner and his family. Then, one afternoon in June 1882, a large meteorite crashed into the farm, beside the well. It was metallic and contained a substance of an indescribable color that proved toxic. While scientists were never able to tell what (or who) the meteor contained, its effects were undeniable—the entire Gardner family was struck by insanity, illness, and worse, whilst the land around them was slowly drained of life. " Any reviews appreciated. Please? available a a single MP3 file or 3-Part MP3 or OGG files.

There is something so intrinsically 'other' about Lovecraft's writing; it's a horror category unto itself.
The reason I liked this that it gets closer to making Lovecraft a little more mainstream. Lovecraft the movies that are based on them, if done waking nightmares Loved it. If you go into it knowing it's not a huge budget movie, the material, you'll appreciate it much more.

The color is actually magenta, and magenta doesn't have its own wavelength. It doesn't actually exist. Image formatted for monitors without squant support. A story from 1927 by H. P. Lovecraft inspired by Arthur Machen 's "The Novel of the White Powder" (from the novel The Three Imposters). The story is first told from the perspective of a property investigator visiting the town of Arkham who is surveying prospective sites for a new reservoir. Eventually he starts asking about the mysterious "blasted heath" which the people had been trying to avoid talking about for the entire time. Eventually he finds Ammi, an old man living near the heath, who is willing to explain what happened there and why absolutely nothing can live on that burgeoning plot of land... The story then shifts perspective to Ammi who tells about how the Gardner family found a meteor that had crashed to earth one night and the horrific things that arose because of that. The story is one of several of Lovecraft's that received an audio drama adaptation from the Atlanta Radio Theater Company. Strange as it may seem, elements of this short story surface in the video game Maniac Mansion. It also received a manga adaptation by Gou Tanabe alongside some of Lovecraft's other stories. It has inspired some films: Die, Monster, Die! : starring Boris Karloff, it takes some of the ideas of the novel and then follows a completely different plot. The Curse: starring Wil Wheaton and directed by David Keith, actually has a plot not so unfaithful to the novel. Color From the Dark: Transplants the story from 1890's America to World War II Italy, and the Color comes from deep underground instead of from space. It also changes the Gardner boys into a Composite Character; a mute girl. Die Farbe: A German movie filmed in black and white—except, of course, for the eponymous Colour—which is, sans a few changes, the most faithful adaptation of the original source of the story. It was also a major inspiration for the Color of Madness DLC of Darkest Dungeon. Annihilation (2018): A 2018 horror movie that while adapted from the novel of the same name, it definitely has a identical premise and ideas, with a meteor strike containing an alien presence crashes into a lighthouse and emanates a colorful radiation that negatively affects all organisms it comes into contact with, mainly horrific mutations of the animals and humans who travel into it. Color Out of Space (2020), a film adaptation directed by Richard Stanley and starring Nicolas Cage, was made in 2019. The story can be read here. Provides Examples Of Adult Fear: Poor Nahum gets a lot of this. First his farm, which was his livelihood, gets contaminated and ruined by the color. Then his family starts getting sick. Then his wife goes mad. Then one of his sons goes mad and then dies. And then, after his wife is also dead, his remaining two sons disappear. Aerith and Bob: Thaddeus and Merwin are relatively normal names compared to Nahum, Nabby, and Zenas. Ambiguous Ending: Neither Ammi nor the investigator are sure if drowning the old Gardner farmlands with the reservoir will neutralise the remaining Colour spore or cause it to spread further, but there's little either of them can do about its implementation. Animalistic Abomination: Gardner's animals turn into twisted abominations before dying. Body Horror: The penultimate fate of the Colour's victims. Came from the Sky: That's no normal meteor. The Corruption: On people, plants, buildings and the landscape alike. It even causes affected people to lose their minds. Cruel and Unusual Death: The ultimate fate of the Colour's prey. Affected organisms, including animals and people, turn gray and brittle, and ultimately crumble to dust, alive and conscious until the very end. Driven to Suicide: At least one of the Gardner children killed himself rather than suffer the fate that befell their mother. Eldritch Abomination: The titular Colour is a particularly creepy example because its nature is never discerned—only its effects vis-à-vis Ammi's tale and the nature of the heath itself. It simply crashed on the property one day and anything else is pure speculation. Eldritch Location: The Blasted Heath is a slowly, inexorably expanding area that is completely and totally dead. Nothing lives there— nothing, not even germs or mold. It is a place of rock, dust, and ash. The End... Or Is It? : One blob of light fails to leave the farm's well, implying it's still down there. Energy Being: The Colour is either a living cloud of gas, or this. Assuming it's alive at all. Fictional Colour: Goes without saying. Fisher Kingdom: A meteorite containing a substance of a color and an element unknown to man has landed in the well of a farmhouse. The soil around the well begins to change and a malaise radiates outward, in which all animal, plant, and human life begins to deform and mutate, taking on the color of the meteorite and eventually turning gray and crumbling into dust. And Nahum's story implies that people can't bring themselves to leave the area, even after they grasp that something horrible is happening. Humanoid Abomination: Humans last longer than most creatures affected by the Colour but instead turn into... things that are definitely not human anymore. Ignorance Is Bliss: At one point, the narrative points out that if Ammi Pierce had ever stopped to consider the implications of all the strange things occurring on Nahum's lands, he would have gone completely insane. Light Is Not Good: Everything that gets corrupted eventually starts glowing. A brightly glowing... something that may or may not have been from one of the globules in the meteorite also rises up out of the well and launches itself into the sky, and there's another one still there. Lovecraft Country: One of the Lovecraft stories set in the fictional Arkham county, Massachusetts. Kill It with Water: The investigator decides to make the Blasted Heath the site of a new reservoir, and hopes that it will keep the Colour at bay. Though he vows to never drink the water from that reservoir. Madwoman in the Attic: When Nahum's wife goes mad, Nahum locks her up in the attic. When his son Thaddeus goes insane too, he is treated the same way. Magic Meteor: Except that instead of granting powers, it spreads The Corruption. Mercy Kill: It is strongly implied, though not explicitly stated, that Ammi Pierce kills Mrs. Gardner when he finds her in her mutated state. Ammi would give me no added particulars of this scene, but the shape in the corner does not reappear in his tale as a moving object. There are things which cannot be mentioned, and what is done in common humanity is sometimes cruelly judged by the law. No Biochemical Barriers: Averted. In the early stages of the Corruption, the plants and fruit that grow on the property look unusually large and glossy, but are disgusting to the taste and likely toxic. No Name Given: The name of the property investigator is not revealed. Not Hyperbole: The investigator assumes that people are blowing this "blasted heath" out of proportion until he actually sees it, and realizes the name is actually a bit of an understatement. Pillar of Light: A huge stream of light was coming out of the well just before the Colour departs. Promoted to Love Interest: A romantic subplot is introduced in the radio version between Ammi Pierce and Mrs. Gardner. According to this version they were briefly involved before she got married and she later tries to seduce him again so he'll take her away from Nahum Gardner's irradiated lands before she succumbs to the effects of The Colour. Scenery Porn: Deep dark woods are described in excruciating detail. Science Cannot Comprehend Phlebotinum: Scientists subject the mysterious meteorite to every test and experiment at their disposal and have nothing to show for it by the end. Shown Their Work: Lovecraft wanted to pursue a career in astronomy but was forced to abandon it when he dropped out of school due to health problems. A lot of things he learned about meteorites make it into the story. For instance, the fact that the Colour's meteorite is still hot to the touch after crashing, like most people think real meteorites would be, is a plot point, as it's the first thing that clues the scientists in that there's something not quite right about it. The Smurfette Principle: Nabby is the only female Gardner, and by extension the only woman in the whole short story aside from Ammi's unnamed wife. Starfish Aliens: The Colour. This was Invoked by Lovecraft, who didn't like how human-like aliens were in other works of his time. He took it Up to Eleven too, as the end result is something closer to a bacteria infection, slime mold, or non-living nuclear radiation than anything else. Its motivations, if any, are unknown and possibly unknowable. Is it feeding? Terraforming the planet? Killing for fun? All of the above? None of the above? There Is Another: Played for horror. Pierce notices that when the Colour leaves Earth, a part of it breaks off, try to follow the rest, only to fail and return to the well. Some of the Colour remains on Earth, which in all probability is the reason for the Blasted Heath. Title Drop: "This was no fruit of such worlds and suns as shine on the telescopes and photographic plates of our observatories. This was no breath from the skies whose motions and dimensions our astronomers measure or deem too vast to measure. It was just a colour out of space. A frightful messenger from unformed realms of infinity beyond all nature as we know it. From realms whose mere existence stuns the brain and numbs us with the black, extracosmic gulfs it throws open before our frenzied eyes. " Unfazed Everyman: Ammi is a rather unlikely protagonist for a Lovecraft story. Not only did he keep visiting the Gardener farm long after everyone else was shunning it, he even stayed in his home at the edge of that forest after the whole thing went down, and remained there for the rest of his life. Though the narrator does note that "his head has been a little queer for years", implying that he's at least a little mad. Vampiric Draining: The Colour seems to drain Life Energy from its victims until they're nothing but grey ash. You Cannot Grasp the True Form: The titular "colour" is unlike any color in the normal spectrum, which under conventional logic would suggest it simply being invisible. Maybe it isn't even a colour, as it's only said a colour is the closest thing to which it can be compared. Or, it could be ultraviolet or infrared (more likely the former), which are colors barely out of the human visible spectrum.
