Yet the viewer knows that commerce is flooding in, and that the Chief Factor’s cow is the first milestone of many in a land that will be radically transformed. Cookie and King’s surreptitious milking of the cow can barely be called a crime, yet the Chief Factor’s status forbids it; the cow and her milk are his property. For all the mythos around the frontier as a land of opportunity, Oregon’s ranks of power are already so rigid that even Cookie and King’s humble dreams of entrepreneurship sound far-fetched. Reichardt has long excelled at smuggling those kinds of provocative messages into such simple, spare narratives. Wendy and Lucy, a 2008 drama about a young homeless woman trying to make her way up to Alaska in search of work, uses a series of small obstacles to build up a crushing sense of futility, demonstrating how a seemingly minor inconvenience can amount to life or death for someone on the margins of society. Though First Cow lacks that film’s contemporary thrust, it has the same atmosphere of hopelessness for Cookie and King in the face of encroaching capitalism, mercilessly chugging down the Columbia River like a barge full of cattle. Even so, Reichardt’s astonishing gift at managing tone ensures that First Cow never comes off as bleak or unrelentingly grim. Cookie and King’s connection is genuinely heartwarming. Reichardt depicts many of their misadventures (including a mission that involves making a clafoutis for the Chief Factor and his upper-crust guests) with a light comic touch, which turns riveting as the stakes get higher for the pair’s baking operation. MICHEL MARTIN, HOST: And finally today, two male bonding quest movies opened in theaters this week. The one that got mixed reviews involves animated elf brothers. The one that's getting raves is about drifters in the Old West. Critic Bob Mondello says the film "First Cow" examines an unusual friendship and a good deal more. BOB MONDELLO, BYLINE: We begin in the here and now with a dog finding two skeletons side by side in the Oregon woods. Then director Kelly Reichardt flashes back two centuries to explore how they might have gotten there, to an 1820s Gold Rush that's long on hardship, short on creature comforts and ripe for dreamers hoping to get rich quick. (SOUNDBITE OF FILM, "FIRST COW") ORION LEE: (As King Lu) There's no way for a poor man to start. You need capital. We need some kind of miracle. JOHN MAGARO: (As Cookie Figowitz) Need leverage. LEE: (As King Lu) Or a crime. MONDELLO: Runaway Chinese immigrant King Lu is the brains here. Hash-slinger Cookie Figowitz is the talent. He foragers for mushrooms and berries and provides meals for trappers that fall on deaf tastebuds, as it were. But he tells King Lu if he had some milk, he could make an oily cake, sort of a fritter. Intriguing because the camp is abuzz about a new arrival, the first cow in Oregon, which gives King Lu an idea. LEE: (As King Lu) We have to take what we can when the taking is good. MAGARO: (As Cookie Figowitz) Seems dangerous. LEE: (As King Lu) So is anything worth doing. MONDELLO: Cookie goes along on a nighttime milking expedition, and properly fortified, his oily cakes hit the spot. UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR #1: (As character) Good lord. Give me another. MONDELLO: That last voice belongs to the cow's owner, a smug, self-satisfied have among the have-nots of the town. MONDELLO: Which means he's none the wiser about their pilfering - yet. Filmmaker Kelly Reichardt is telling a tale here of friendship between men who have little in common besides their state in life, drifters trying to make it in a frontier outpost that's marked by capitalism at its rawest, civilization not yet civil, society barely formed but already growing rigid. LEE: (As King Lu) History isn't here yet. It's coming, but maybe this time we can take it on our own terms. MONDELLO: In Reichardt's telling, things rarely happen the way characters expect or the way the audience expects. How those first skeletons get there at the beginning, for instance? "First Cow's" twisty narrative offers a sort of answer, though Reichardt's in no hurry to get to it. So she can take time out to marvel at natural splendors and human frailty to examine dreams and deceit and devotion, and to take lots of unexpected detours to tell, in short, a resonant, funny and quite moving shaggy cow story. In FIRST COW, a young woman and her dog discover two skeletons in the present-day Pacific Northwest woods. The story then flashes back to the early 1800s, where a gentle cook called "Cookie" ( John Magaro) travels with a band of rough fur trappers. While hunting for food in the woods, Cookie finds a Chinese immigrant, King Lu (Orion Lee), who's on the run from angry Russians. Cookie decides to help, rather than exposing him. Later, in town, the two men meet again and become fast friends. They learn that the chief fur trader ( Toby Jones) has obtained a cow, and Cookie thinks that if he had milk, he could make delicious biscuits. King Lu proposes that they steal some milk at night. They do, and Cookie's biscuits, called "oily cakes, " are so good that the pair decide to sell them. They're a hit, and business is so brisk that the friends may soon have enough money to move on to somewhere else. But unfortunately, the chief has heard about the cakes... Is it any good? Director Kelly Reichardt approaches this historical material with her singular, gentle, observant style, putting an emphasis on pairs and on inequality. It's a period piece, but it's also quite relevant. Based on a novel and co-written by Jonathan Raymond (who also wrote or co-wrote most of Reichardt's earlier movies), First Cow seems to find its pace based on Cookie's gentle kindness (he even helps right a struggling salamander) and King Lu's soft-spokenness. Their domestic scenes together -- cleaning, chopping wood, and especially cooking -- have a quiet, lyrical, tactile quality, almost like poetry. The film's music, which is often diegetic (shown on screen), effectively adds to the mood. But Reichardt also establishes menace and threat early on in First Cow, from the present-day prologue (featuring Alia Shawkat) to the thuggish trappers, a bar fight, and even bear-like settlers admiring Cookie's clean boots. This constant imbalance keeps the movie feeling tense throughout. But, of course, the real point is the way that Reichardt depicts the unraveling of the American dream, how the gulf between the haves and have nots is often insurmountable. Yet the movie -- which shares themes with Reichardt's earlier films Old Joy and Meek's Cutoff -- is still beautiful and satisfying, perhaps because of the way it constantly strives forward. It opens with a quote from poet William Blake: "The bird a nest, the spider a web, man friendship. " As long as we connect and keep going, hope is still possible. Talk to your kids about...
